Wednesday's Walk Down Memory Lane

Lynnette Kraft started Wednesday's Walk Down Memory Lane to encourage us to relive and share our memories. They can be recent memories, distant memories, happy memories, sad memories.

I don't think I've shared this one before.

When I was in my 20's, I was Hostess at a motel restaurant. One day I was hostessing and a couple came in for breakfast. When they were leaving, they just walked out...without paying!

I went after them in the hallway and tactfully asked him if he would like to charge his bill to his room. I was assuming he had a room and it was the only thing I could think of, spur of the moment, that would bring up his bill without saying "HEY, YOU CAN'T LEAVE WITHOUT PAYING FOR YOUR FOOD!"

He said "Sure, put it on my room tab." and started walking on!

Now, how would I know what room to charge???? I halted him and asked him to sign his bill so we'd charge the appropriate bill. He did, altho he seemed quite irritated that I was being so incessant and bothering him.

After he signed the bill and left I looked at his signature.

"C. Everett Koop"

I could have died. He was the Surgeon General for the United States at the time, but he wasn't in his uniform that he always wore on television. He was just in ordinary clothes so I didn't recognize him! No wonder he was being so impatient with me. Of course I should have known who he was and where to send the bill! (Yeah, right! Actually, I think that was a little rude to assume I'd know him, but that's another story.)

  1. Wow - that was your brush with fame! I agree that he shouldn't just expect people to know who he was, although people in the spotlight probably get used to that happening.

  2. I never would have recognized him either. And shame on him for his behavior!

  4. You know what? Even after reading the signature, I wouldn't have known who it was! HA! He shouldn't have just assumed he could eat and walk out without paying anyway! Or am I missing something? Does the Surgeon General get to eat for free?

  5. Oh, I guess he actually was a guest at the hotel and he was just assuming you'd know who he was - he wasn't actually trying to eat for free was he? Sorry, I was confused! ha! Well, either way, he shouldn't just assume people know who he is. I mean if he would have been Harrison Ford it would have been a different story, right? :) hee hee

  7. I think you handled it just fine,...and I think He should have explained who he was, and should been more polite!

One time when I worked at a jewelry store the district attorney came in and I waited on her, and when I was writing up her ticket I asked her name and she looked at me like I was crazy for not recognizing her! As soon as she said her name I recognized who she was,...but I just hadn't been expecting her to be there shopping in the middle of the day. Oh well!,...things like that just happen I guess, (:>) And it makes a good story to tell people.

    Thanks for sharing today!

  8. I think he was pretty rude to handle it that way! Pretty cool that you had a brush with fame though...I honestly don't think I've ever encountered a "famous" person ever. :)

  9. I would have never recognized him--as a matter of fact, I've never even heard of him. lol. :D Sounds like you handled it just fine! And hopefully he was a little humbled after that experience too! heehee. ;)

    Thanks for sharing!
