Those who have been with me for a while might remember a year ago when I had my Medi-Port placed and had infiltration problems. It was a mess.
Well, I'm having problems again, but not infiltration this time.
For about 4 doses of my meds I could get a blood return, but when I'd go to flush I could hardly get the plunger to move. It was like I had a lock on my catheter. I was afraid I might be infiltrated again, so didn't do this morning's 6AM dose. (I thought I could sleep longer than 5 hrs, but the neighbor's dog just wouldn't shut up so I was up anyway!)
The homehealth nurse came to my house to change my needle and dressing. First, she couldn't get the needle to come out. It was really stuck in there.
Then she tried a few times to access and she couldn't get a blood return. I was getting pretty sore from her attempts so she gave up and I started calling for a place that could check my Port.
No one could get me in today, but I have an appointment for tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully they will be able to access with no problem. I will have missed 4 doses of my antibiotic.
I was posting about this on Facebook and am finding out a few CFers access their own ports. This was totally news to me. I posted about it on a CF site and found out others have been trained to do it, also.
So, maybe I can be taught to do it myself. I sure would save some money and maybe... if it isn't too hard... some extra poking around. Some people tell me they have family members that do it for them, but my husband is VERY squeamish about things like that plus he wouldn't be home when I needed him to do it.
That would leave Ryan. As much as I think he would like to inflict me with pain at times...I don't think he would be up to doing it, either.
Maybe I can.

Yikes!! I don't have a port so I don't know. I know with a PICC they have told me to call them if the line won't flush.
ReplyDeleteI bet you could do it, but it would take some getting used to.
ReplyDeleteStay brave. I don't deal well with the pain associated with needles. I wish I could be stronger.
