People with Cystic Fibrosis are prone to CFRD (Cystic Fibrosis Related Diabetes) whether they are overweight or underweight. I'm not sure, but I think it's mostly because our pancreas is affected so much by the sticky mucus - but I'm not certain. Any of you CFers can correct me!
If you haven't had a Glucose Challenge, you have to fast and have blood drawn. After that you drink this lovely beverage.

They gave me my own room with a nice recliner and used my MediPort for accessing. After my drink they waited an hour and then drew blood, then another hour and drew more blood. Hopefully I don't have to wait long for my results.
When I was leaving the hospital I was faced with this.

Is that thing pointing at my car?
What a way to greet people who come to the hospital, huh?
Living in a Civil War town we have cannons all around and I thought it was funny how this one was situated in front of the hospital POINTING AT THE CARS!
I've never had a glucose test. I didn't know you lived in a civil war town. My husband and daughter are big Civil War buffs, and would love that!
ReplyDeleteIt is due to our inability to use our own insulin (that our body produces). We must replace it with insulin shots. I also thing it is due to the fact that our pancreas takes a beating and forgets it job.
ReplyDeleteI have CFRD but I only use insulin shots when I am doing hard core IV drugs or prednisone.
Debbi, they can also test your blood to see if your pancreas has had issues over the past few months. I never did the icky tasting juice for CFRD diagnosis. I did have to drink it when they diagnosed me with gestational diabetes. I was literally bouncing off the walls-- way too sweet for me.
I had this test twice now. I know I am in the minority with this one, but I love that orange sugar drink. My test shows that I am hypoglycemic, my sugars drop quick and suddenly after having a sudden surge of sugar. I hope your results come back normal. Keep us posted.
