I had my first accident and it was a doozy

I've been driving for 33 years now and had my first accident this morning. It was my fault and I'm very upset about it. I wasn't doing anything wrong, like driving too fast or talking on the phone or anything, but I came around a curve and didn't slow down enough for a car waiting to turn. I don't think it dawned on me that he was stopped entirely, but I did see he was on the phone. Anyway, I slammed on my brakes but didn't get stopped fast enough.

He hardly had ANY damage to his Wrangler Jeep, but I had smoke pouring out of my crumpled hood and oil running out.

I was trying not to cry. I couldn't think of what to do. It's not like I've done this before, you know!

The guy I hit got out and started yelling at me and told me he was hurt. The ambulance came on got him.

I'm worried about a lawsuit, too. This guy is in his early 30's and a restaurant owner. This happened right in front of his restaurant and everyone came out to check on him. He's lived in our tiny little "Mayberry" all his life and everyone knows him and his wife. He knew the officer, the tow truck driver, everyone. And from what a couple people have told me, he IS the type of person to sue me.

So...my nerves are shot. I've already been worrying about all of the medical bills and insurance problems, then this...the adjustor hasn't checked our van yet but over the phone they told me that it sounds like it's totalled. The van is an '02 and they said if it's leaking the fluids and from what they heard it sounded like it would cost more than it would be worth.

I know all things happen for a reason and I've been asking God what good can come out of this and what His reason could be.

  2. Oh no! I'm sorry this happened! They are called acidents for a reason. I never understand the people who sue just "because they can." It seems selfish to me. Now, if it was DWI-related, or something like that, I would understand. I'll keep you in my prayers. I assume you were unhurt?

  3. I wasn't hurt.

He was driving a really nice Wrangler Jeep and I don't have the impression they are hurting financially. We ARE and I sure hope God softens his heart and he doesn't do anything.

  6. I'm so sorry this happened!! I'm really glad you are ok though.

I rear ended someone last year. We didn't call the police (yeah, dumb on my part), because there was just a little damage to my car and none to hers. So, I called my insurance company and told them what happened and they said if she called, they would start a claim.

Long story short... she called them a month later and said she had been injured and so had her friend and child, AND she told them that she had tons of medical bills and that her car was damaged. All I can say to you is DON'T WORRY and let the insurance adjusters handle this. Nothing ever came of this, or I didn't ever hear anything again. That's the reason we have insurance, so we don't have to worry about things like this. I know you don't need this stress on top of everything else!!

I know easier said then done... Stress is like a rocking chair you just keep rocking but it gets you know where!

  16. It is bad enough having a accident, but with all of the chaos that comes with it, I can see where it has stressed you out and stretched you thin.

I am praying for a good outcome to all of this...very soon!~

  17. Oh my goodness, we travel on a two lane road many miles daily to take our daughter to a school which meets the needs of learning challenged children, I so easily can see this scenario occurring to us. Fast speed on the roads, but no turn lanes.
Blessing and prayers, that all works to the glory of God.
