Asking for your 'puter input

I hope that I don't need to buy a new computer very soon because we need to pay other bills instead. But our Dell PC is very, very heavily used. We do school on it, my son plays Runescape on it, I use it...It seems to always be in use. We've had it for 2 years.

Lately it's been very sluggish and doing very odd things and locking up alot. I'm not sure if it's the ISP or my computer, but because our computer is so heavily used and because of our schoolwork being on it, I am always wondering if we should have another on hand BEFORE the present one dies.

Our last 2 PC's have been Dell's, but from what I've heard they aren't rated that great anymore like they used to be. We can't have a Mac because our curriculum won't work on one.

I'd like to hear your input. What kind of computer do you have? How well do you like it? Have you had any problems and were they handled well? I'd love to have a laptop next time, but I'm not sure that's feasible. I just read on Rebecca's site that it's not good to do photo editing on them, for one thing. It would be nice to have one, though.

Please let me know your preferences (brand).

**editing after the first 2 comments** I have already emptied the Temp Files, run DeFrag, emptied Trashbin and things we don't use. I also run Anti-Spyware already. I've done all of those things and it still lags and drags.

  1. We have a Dell too. It's only a year old, but I've noticed it slowing down just a bit. I need to go through and delete what doesn't need to be on there-- cruddy pics that I decided shouldn't be edited, old papers the kids wrote for school, etc. I'm hoping that will speed it up some. Also running a spyware check (I like spybot for that), and defragging the disk, etc. The kids use this thing all the time, and so do I... so it probably needs a tune-up. Maybe doing a few of those things will help your computer speed up a bit too. Even if you take it somewhere to have it checked over and cleaned up, it would be much cheaper than buying a new one. Just a thought. :-)

  2. We have a Dell too. Ours is a few years old and has really become very slow too. It drives my batty...especially when I am listing my ebay stuff..feels like it takes forever. I need to do the things that Lily suggested and maybe that would help a bit. So all that to say I have absolutely no advice because I am in the same situation!!

  3. I have a dell laptop and that is what I use for my editing......the only thing is that I run my pictures off an external hard drive because they take up too much space.....that is probably what Rebecca was talking about....space issues!!

    Good luck with your search.

  4. HI!
We have a Dell, just got it at Christmas. It seems to be ok. I had a HP before...LOVED it! It lasted 7 years. Just a little advice...go find one of those 'cpmputer geeks' in a strip mall that does computer repairs. My old HP had crashed, or I thought it had, took it to one of those guys(not a chain...just a local guy) he fixed it, made it run better...etc...all for less than $200.
Hope you can get it worked out!
    Have a great night,
    Jada

  6. We have all dells at our house. My husband builds and fixes computers. He loves dells and says that they are the best to work on.

Maybe you need more memory. I'll ask him his opinion on your situation.

Hp's are horrid for fixing. Our dells run great and we have no issues. It probably helps that the computer guy lives here. I agree that if you need help, don't go to a big store like Best*Buy, they will suck the money right out of your pocket. A small independant business will do it much cheaper. Come to Michigan and my husband will charge you about $40 + parts. Can't beat that!

    Happy keyboarding!
