Silence!

Yesterday I went to the ENT about my laryngitis. He checked my vocal chords/folds and said that they are very red, very imflammed and very dry. He said when they get very bad like that, that "fake folds" try to take over. I never knew there were fake chords, but he said there are (located right above the "real ones"). The fake ones hang down over the real ones and try to take over. But they can't.

He said when it gets as bad as mine, it is hard to train things back as they should be and may take a while. I'm to hydrate myself more than usual and...

not talk or whisper. Well, actually, I can't talk anyhow. All that comes out is a whisper, but that's actually worse than trying to talk. He says I need to let it completely rest. For however many days it takes. (It's been since about Jan. 10th!)

It's been very interesting. This is what I've been using:

It's a 7-8 yr. old wipe off board that's seen better days, but it's coming in very handy. I carry it with me everywhere. When my son sees me writing he says "Oh no! She's writing me more hate mail!" lol

Do you know how hard it is at drive-up windows when you can't talk???

And my son is milking this for all it's worth. He is constantly asking me questions and they aren't "yes" and "no" questions. Especially in the car, when I can't write on the board. Then he'll pretend he doesn't know why I'm not answering and will ask over and over and over. I'll finally smack him and he'll laugh. What a sense of humor! But it's driving me nuts! The other thing he is doing is deliberately misunderstanding my gestures. Or "mime-ing" as he calls it. Like in the car he was cracking his knuckles on his lap and I finally slapped at his hand. He knew what I meant but said "What? Is my zipper undone? Am I indecent?"... He's doing that with every gesture that I make! So I'd better stick to the board.

The doctor recommended voice therapy, too, but that's not going to happen. I doubt if insurance would even pay for that. I "said" I'll try to get things back on my own first.

My sore throat, glands and ears are due to the same problem and not a virus. I was glad to hear I didn't have mono or something contagious.

I'll leave you with this. Totally unrelated, but funny.

Now, I'm going to watch Biggest Loser!!!!

  6. wow! I think I might like not being able to talk for a while...although I think I would really prefer not being able to hear. The kids are so loud.

I hope this all passes quickly for you.

  8. Rest that voice!! It's such a boy thing to tease you! My cousins (both boys 22 + 24) call their mom Pasty instead of mom, just to irritate her! They are so good at that, but so sweet! Hang in there!

  9. I hope you get your voice back soon! I've had laryngitis before (although not as long as you)...and it is so frustrating when you can't communicate well with others! I'll be praying for you!
