When I was still single I was getting ready to go on a date. We were just getting into the car when my brother yelled out the door that someone needed to drive to the Emergency Room. He came backing out the front door with his hands in front of him, cradling my father's bloody hands.
He said that my father had cut his hand on the table saw and to go get some rags. Ok, I was a little rattled and not the smartest cookie in the jar. I ran into the house and came out with...a dusting rag! Well, it was a rag!!! It was just very ...dusty...and dirty! But they wrapped my dad's hand up in it and we took off in my date's VW bug.
The car didn't have very good shocks and we lived in the country. Every bump in the back road my dad would groan and yell, but Neil knew he needed to hurry.
When we got to the ER, my brother went in with my dad and I took care of the signing in. Then we had to find my mother. My parents had a very elderly couple visiting. My mom and the woman had gone shopping, but I was pretty certain I knew where they'd gone so we drove there and I told my mom what happened and brought her and the friend back to the hospital.
Then we remembered the man. It turned out, he was very hard of hearing and never even knew anything had happened and that we had all left the house! We had quite a laugh over that.
My dad cut off one finger and the tip of another one. The dr. couldn't do anything about the finger cut off, so we wrapped it in foil and put it in the freezer. My dad has always been fascinated by science and medical things, so we figured he would want to check it out when he was home. But his mother, my grandmother, was coming to help out and he was afraid that with her bad eyesight she might mistake it for sausage, so he asked us to throw it out!!
I have a closeup shot of my dad's hand when he was playing pool a few years ago, but it's on a CD and I can't figure out how to get it onto the computer. So here is a picture of my family years ago, just so you have a picture!

I'm the cutie in the middle, looking up at my dad. This picture is a huge one that is hanging over my parents bed.
I have a similar memory but it was my hubby who injured himself. He cut off the tip of a finger using a table saw.
ReplyDeleteOh, that brings back memories. I was newly married and I received a call from my dad one afternoon letting me know he had just cut the top of his thumb off with the table saw. My mom was out and he needed a ride to the ER. So I hopped into our car and went and picked him and and took him to the hospital. After I dropped him off, I went and searched for my mom. It was a small town and I found her at the grocery store. I told her what happened and took care of her groceries for her, so that she could head to the hospital right away. He is now missing his nail on that thumb, I was so thankful it wasn't worse!
ReplyDeleteAnother thing about that trip, my husband and I had an old Honda and it was stick shift, I was still getting use to driving it and had to stop on a hill, I had trouble getting going again, so my dad had to help me. I felt terrible!
How terrifying that must have been! That's funny about forgetting your parent's friend. LOL.
ReplyDeleteLove the pic. You are such a doll!
Now maybe I am glad that my husband isn't handy and can't use a table saw!! yikes!
ReplyDeleteMy dad also cut part of his finger off while using a table saw!It was just a few years ago.
ReplyDeleteYou were quite a cute little thing:)
Great memory! I know that must have been awful! I have to laugh about the other man who was hard of hearing though :)
ReplyDeleteCute picture...you are precious!
I just love the way you write, Debbi! Thanks for sharing this "funny" (although not really...) memory. And the photo was great, too. Have a blessed Easter! ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh, Ouch!!! That must have been so frightening for everybody. I absolutely hate stuff like that.
ReplyDeleteHow funny that he wanted to take his finger home. It would be kind of weird to leave your finger somewhere. Never thought much about that. ha!
Love the picture by the way. VERY cute!

Ouch!! I won't let my hubby use a table saw because I am frightened of this very thing happening!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture! I absolutely love older photographs!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Jada
Oh my goodness! That is so funny about the man not knowing you were gone and about your Dad not wanting his finger mistaken for sausage! How strange that must have been to just throw out one of your fingers! I'm so glad it turned out okay. That must've been so scary at the time!
ReplyDeleteToo many of us have memories like this. Mine is of the day my son-in-law cut his finger real bad on the saw and my daughter was out of town, so he called us and we took him to the ER. It was such a frightening evening. No funny things to add to our story though.
ReplyDeleteAll's well that ends well.
